Photography is an art that complements the Sibiu International Theater Festival. Through it, moments are immortalized, the spirit and memory of events are prolonged and shared. Being part of the FITS team of photographers is not easy, but it is certainly a unique and rewarding experience, both professionally and personally. FITS photographers witness the transformations over time of the festival, its spectators, the organization, the city and the times, thus always being part of the miracle.
Three of those who have been contributing to the FITS image archive for years and capturing moments by means of which the festival is represented in numerous corners of the world – Dragoș Dumitru, Mihaela Marin and Sebastian Marcovici – answered a few of our questions.
Sebastian Marcovici is a nationally renowned photographer due to several original images taken over time, which have gone viral and which have brought him several awards. He is the president of the FOCUS Sibiu Association, bass player in the band DOMINO and coordinator of FITS photographers.

For how many years have you been collaborating with FITS?
Sebastian Marcovici: For 15 years, as the official photographer and for eight years as the coordinator of the photographers’’ team.
How has this experience changed you as a professional?
Sebastian Marcovici: Since 2006, when I was still in college, I’ve been eyeing official FITS photos with envy and had this goal on my bucket list. FITS has changed me as a photographer, but also on a personal level, this avalanche of culture invading our city for ten days can truly change lives.

What does FITS mean to you? What motivates you to return year after year to the FITS team of photographers?
Sebastian Marcovici: The multitude and diversity of events within FITS is an artistic challenge for me every year. Because I have been photographing this festival for so long, every year I have to capture something new and original, to surpass myself as a photographer, but also as a person who resonates with this cultural mammoth. It is an honor to coordinate the photographers’ team of one of the biggest theater festivals in Europe.

How do you see performance photography?
Sebastian Marcovici: For me, performance photography represents the moment when there are no more limitations, photography as such should not have any limitations, art as such should not have constraints, but performance photography is the most attractive for me, in this sense. Freedom is priceless, and this moment of nirvana only FITS can offer me during the cultural year.
